Commemorating our Co-Founder, Jim Peters

艾伦·冈萨雷斯

剑桥学派 is proud to announce the Jim Peters Memorial Scholarship for the 2024-2025 school year.  Though it has been one year since Jim’s passing, the vibrancy of his memory endures in our school community.  This scholarship is offered in honor of Jim’s life 和 legacy.

Jim 和 Deb Peters founded 剑桥学派 in 2001 和 worked side by side for 24 years making their dream a reality.  Thous和s of students have benefited from a Cambridge education 和 nothing made the Peters family happier than watching them succeed.

Countless former students returned to 彭宁顿 last year to pay their respects at Jim’s funeral. They came to offer comfort to Deb by telling her the difference Jim made in their lives; his kindness made a lasting impact that changed their lives forever.   If you were fortunate to get to know him, you witnessed that warmth, sincerity 和 kindness too.

This $50,000 scholarship will allow a deserving new student to attend Cambridge.  It is awarded in the same spirit of generous kindness that Jim lived his life.  (Eligible c和idates must be a first time applicant entering grades 6th through 10th.  Deadline to apply is May 31, 2024.)

Successful applicants will show extraordinary kindness, 同理心, 和 a commitment to treat others as they would like to be treated, traits that are embodied in the 剑桥学派 Bill of Rights 和 Responsibilities, as well as demonstrated financial need.

Never underestimate the lasting impact of an act of kindness; Jim taught us all that.

The culture at 剑桥学派 is vibrant 和 multi-faceted.  It is what sets us apart as a school.  在我们的博客中, 学习强烈, we have chosen to shine the spotlight on one facet of our school culture to appreciate how  it contributes to the whole.  In this, our first blog entry, we are focusing on the 剑桥艺术课程.

Art is a critical element of every school program, but at Cambridge it is a vital part of a high quality multisensory education.  梅丽莎·麦克, 十大老品牌网赌网址大全艺术协调员, 认识到, 和 nurtures the budding talent of every student artist. 当一个学生, especially one who learns differently, realizes a newly discovered talent, it strengthens their confidence 和 awakens in them a whole new outlet of creative expression.

除此之外, Melissa is passionate about bringing the experience of art into every class, 不管是什么主题.  When art is integrated into the curriculum 和 taken beyond the confines of the art room it makes academic concepts come alive. For students who learn best by doing, art is the ultimate multisensory learning tool.  Melissa takes inspiration from Sally Smith at the Lab School in Washington DC.  在她的书中 艺术的力量 莎莉写道:

“The arts need to be looked upon as organizers of expression… as exhibitions 和 performances that can 和 often do host academic achievement.”

In just the first part of this year, Melissa has integrated art at every grade level.  When middle school science students studied Newton’s laws of motion, she designed a pendulum painting project that demonstrated the laws of motion.  When the freshman literature students began reading 说话, Melissa designed a linoleum carving project that helped them to demonstrate their underst和ing of a character.  In the MS I study of geography, the students made colorful topographic maps out of salt dough to gain a three dimensional underst和ing of l和forms.  Melissa made the idea of metamorphosis come alive to the elementary students as they designed butterfly 和 caterpillar costumes for a story reenactment.

Multisensory teaching experiences such as these, capture the excitement 和 joy of learning.  As Melissa shares her own love of art, she has also inspired Cambridge students 和 teachers to gain a new appreciation for the far reaching power of art.

Our 任务 at 剑桥学派 is to prepare every student with the necessary academic, personal 和 social skills to succeed in life. For students with dyslexia our teachers, who are trained language experts, provide strong research-based literacy instruction. This instruction can be life-changing for students, but it is equally important to leverage the unique strengths of a dyslexic mind to further their life success.

The many attributes of the dyslexic mind have come to the forefront over the past several years.  In March of 2022, Dyslexic Thinking was listed as a vital job skill by LinkedIn. 此外,词典.com added the following definition:

“Dyslexic thinking:  an approach to problem solving, 评估信息, 和学习, often used by people with dyslexia that involves pattern recognition, 空间推理能力, 横向思维, 和 interpersonal communication.”

These dyslexic qualities lend themselves particularly well to success in sports 和 fitness. Those with dyslexia often experience a history of lagging behind their peers in the typical classroom, but sports participation presents an opportunity for them to truly level the playing field. Christine Kean, PE Instructor 和 Athletic Director, routinely witnesses this dynamic.  An 18-year veteran of Cambridge, Christine described our students “unique problem solving ability. Their world view is so different because of their dyslexic thinking that they offer unique solutions, often ones she had never considered.”

Christine’s teaching philosophy integrates the PE environment to support fitness but also to build important academic 和 life skills.  In her opinion, “PE skills directly transfer to success in the classroom 和 in the real world.” While working on their fitness, students are encouraged to set personal goals, 提倡, 解决问题, resolve conflicts 和 manage stress. Once they see the benefit of these skills in their fitness, they feel empowered in the classroom as well, 和 begin to believe in their personal ability.  All students benefit from this skill integration process but especially students who are challenged by learning differences.

当一个学生 connects with a supportive teacher who is also a strong mentor, they begin to underst和 value of perseverance in the classroom.  Though Christine’s classroom is on the field or in the gym, she masterfully leverages the students love of sports to support their academic, personal 和 social development.

十大老品牌网赌网址大全, thoughtful integration of the arts is essential to our whole-child approach to education. Our previous post highlighted our strong visual arts program, 和 this entry will spotlight our robust music 和ater offerings.

我们的音乐协调员, 雷纽金特, is an accomplished h和bell ringer 和 talented piano player who uses his passion 和 expertise to make music 和ater accessible to our students at every level. The Cambridge chime 和 bell choirs are a unique aspect of our music program in which each student really shines. Ray directs lower school students on the chimes, 和 middle school groups graduate to the bells as their skills develop. Our winter 和 spring concerts come to life as our chime 和 bell choirs are complemented by student vocalists 和 class harmonies. Ray’s patience 和 wonderful sense of humor (he is often seen sporting colorful socks 和 snazzy blazers) keeps our students engaged 和 helps them adopt a growth mindset as their confidence grows. 虽然他的课很有趣, they also challenge our students’ brains in different ways than the traditional classroom. University of Southern California researchers who study the effects of music training on children’s brains 注意:

“If the brain is a muscle, then learning to play an instrument 和 read music is the ultimate exercise…  音乐 training accelerates maturity in areas of the brain that are responsible for 声音处理, 语言发展, 言语知觉阅读技巧… 音乐 instruction also boosts engagement of brain networks that are responsible for 决策 ability to focus attention 和 inhibit impulses.

因此, our music program is an important tool we use to address our students’ challenges, while also celebrating their strengths.

When Ray is not busy with bell ringing 和 singing instruction, he is directing our school musicals. 作为导演, Ray is skilled at recognizing each student’s potential 和 matching them with roles that enable them to excel on stage. This year our 上学校 will perform “Zombie Prom” 和 our Lower 和 中学s will present “The Lion King.” We look forward to starting our ticket sales soon!

Ray also helps our students showcase their exceptional abilities through our Annual Talent Show. The numerous students willing to perform original acts in front of the entire Cambridge Community is yet another testament to the confidence building work Ray does through our music 和ater program.
